Summer festivals and traditions in the north

Would you like to know more about the summer traditions and festivities in Alcúdia, Mallorca? Stay with us, because today's post is going to tell you about the most essential happenings this summer of 2019. Let’s go!

Midsummer Night (San Juan)

This celebration is not limited to Alcúdia, or even to the north of Mallorca, but is one of the most important across the whole island. This also means, of course, that it is a major event in Alcúdia and its surrounding area.

San Juan falls on the 24th of June, but the focus of the celebrations is the previous night, the night of 23rd June. The festivities take place on all the beaches of the island, with lots of music, bonfires and barbecues. There are also the traditional correfocs, teeming with devils, fire and fireworks (the display near the Cathedral of Palma, in the centre of the city, is spectacular).

Naturally, you can come along to any of the beaches in Alcúdia on this magical night to spend a summer evening celebrating with your loved ones. You can eat, drink, laugh and celebrate San Juan. Don’t forget that the local tradition is for you to go for a swim at 12 o’clock midnight, or at least to get your feet wet.

San Pedro Festival

Saint Peter is the patron saint of fishermen, and his festivity is held on June 29th every year in Alcúdia. This is one of the main events in the summer festivities in Alcúdia, Mallorca, and you really should not miss it. It is also a great occasion for taking lots of spectacular photos.

The celebrations for San Pedro start with an impressive maritime procession in which a fleet of small boats accompany the image of the saint over the sea and across Alcúdia bay. You should also be aware that the week before is filled with a host of events, concerts and other cultural, leisure activities.

Festival of the Virgin of Victory

These festivities are held in the hermitage of Alcúdia and the surrounding area. The celebrations normally start when the sun goes down on the 1st July, with fun races up to the chapel itself. At night, the celebrations take the form of music and the traditional dances known as “balls de bot”, generally continuing well into the small hours.

On the second day of the fiesta of the Virgen de la Victoria, on 2nd July, the celebrations start very early in the morning with fireworks launched from the Town Hall. After this, a marching band parades through the village streets to “rouse” the locals before a large mass is held in honour of the Virgin, who receives bunches of chamomile as thankful offerings. The celebrations end in the evening with the music and dancing continuing well into the night.

San Jaime

The festivities of San Jaime, patron saint of Alcúdia, are held on the 25th of July. These are the most important of the celebrations held in this town in Mallorca, and they last for approximately one week. There are lots of fun leisure or cultural events and activities going on, with exhibitions, displays, theatre performances, parties and concerts. Everything naturally culminates in the celebration of a special mass in honour of the patron on Saint James’ Day, in the parish church. If you are in Mallorca on 25th July or the week before, it’s a great time to visit and take part in these legendary summer festivities.

The Festival of Lanterns

The Festival of Lanterns is one of the most popular and entertaining of the summer fiestas in Alcúdia, especially for younger people. On 24th August each year, the young people of Alcúdia take to the streets of the town with lamps that they have made themselves from hollowed out melons or watermelons. They sing traditional local songs from the town and Mallorca as they make their way through the streets. It is a highly unusual tradition that you should not miss the opportunity to see if you can.
