Easter is one of the best times to visit Mallorca, the largest of Spains Balearic Islands
Easter is one of the best times to visit Mallorca, the largest of Spain’s Balearic Islands. At this time, the island has extensive cultural and gastronomic activities, including a number of local festivities and celebrations. Between the end of March and April, when it is Easter on the island, there are not as many tourists as in high summer, but the weather is splendid, with milder temperatures. Because Easter is coming to the island soon, and you may be thinking about coming here on holiday, today we are going to tell you everything you need to know!
What goes on at Easter in Mallorca?
There are many religious processions that take place in the cities and villages of Mallorca in Easter Week. These celebrations commemorate Christ’s resurrection and are organized by the different guilds of each region.
These processions start on Palm Sunday and end on Easter Sunday, and are certainly worth seeing and experiencing if you are in Mallorca at this time. Whether you are a believer or not, it is a beautiful tradition that provides insight into some of the real life, history and culture of Mallorca.
Traditional Easter food
You can enjoy the best of local produce during Easter Week in Mallorca, and very good it is, too! The most notable local delicacies made at this time are the famous “panades”, which are round pasties made with sweet or savoury pastry and filled with pork or lamb, peas and sobrasada, a local spiced sausage. They are also made without peas, or with other types of meat or even fish.
Other classic recipes in the Mallorcan cookbook for Easter are “crespells” (a type of biscuit made in different shapes) and “roibols”, half-moon shaped sweet cakes filled with jam, cheese or candied fruit.
Easter in Alcudia
As we mentioned, each village and city on the island has various processions, but there are some that have acquired symbolic status. Among the most famous of these are those of the city of Palma, as the capital of the island. There are many processions here, some of great beauty, and they attract a lot of people because of their location.
On the other hand, the city of Alcudia, with its walls and spectacular beauty, hosts several other famous processions. They start with the Silent Procession, on Palm Sunday, and continue with others on Thursday and Good Friday, when the different guilds occupy the walled centre of Alcudia.
